12:12 is an exhibition project about time visualization. It questions the clock, a familiar and universal object, offering various interpretations through a series of digital projects. Twelve experiments have been designed by Benoit Böhnke (mire.studio), while a second series created by guest designers and artists will showcase a wider variety of approaches.
These proposals are designed to be presented in the form of an exhibition that can be adapted to different screen formats or displayed in public spaces.
While the project explores the relationship between time and technology, it also seeks to approach it in a contemplative way.
History
The history of time measurement tools is rich and closely linked to technological developments. In the more specific context of graphic and digital design, John Maeda's 12 O'Clocks project (1996) is a milestone in the recent history of the discipline. 12:12 is positioned as an extension of this approach. It also follows in the footsteps of experiments conducted by graphic designers such as Karel Martens, who based his graphic experiments on the printing screen in the form of clocks, and Stuart Bailey and his studio O-R-G, whose research is part of a reflection on generative graphic systems and screensavers.
Production
The visual principles implemented take advantage of the perpetual nature of time. Some aspects of these dynamic systems incorporate random elements, such as randomly generated colors, shapes, or movements. Each proposal is developed in HTML, CSS, and javascript, a choice motivated by the flexibility offered by these web languages. This technical choice makes it easy to adapt the productions to different screen formats and contexts.
Exhibition
The project is adaptable to different locations and contexts. It can exist as an exhibition presenting all the proposals, or be distributed in the public space via urban display devices, in places conducive to waiting, for example. It can be displayed on one or more screens, depending on the space available. Finally, this website will bring together all the proposals. Conceived as a project in its own right, it will also be able to present content to enrich reflection on the subject.
